He is a good man. Let us start there, because it is true and because it is the whole difficulty.
Rafa is a good man. He is generous, he is funny, he remembers your children's teachers' names, and when your father was dying he was there four nights out of seven and you were there three, and he has never once said that to anybody and never will.
You love him. That is not in question and never has been.
And here is what happens at every table you have ever sat at with him, and it starts before you have decided anything.
You notice the watch. Then you notice how the room turns when he talks. Then you notice that your mother-in-law asks him things she does not ask you. And by the time the food is going round you have a full running total, updated in real time, entirely without your permission, and you have been carrying it for fourteen years.
You have never said one word of it. Not to your wife, who would be hurt. Not to a friend, who would repeat it. Not in confession, because it always sounds so small when it gets near your mouth.
And you have behaved beautifully for fourteen years. Nobody in that family has the faintest idea. You have toasted him at two anniversaries and meant every word.
But at the end of last month you noticed the sum running while you were doing something entirely ordinary, in your own kitchen, on a Wednesday, with nobody there.
It has stopped needing him in the room. That is what has frightened you.

The proverb is about a spring, not a safe
There is a line that every child in a certain kind of family has heard quoted and almost nobody has heard explained, and the explanation is in the second half of it.
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.Proverbs 4:23
Out of it are the issues of life. The word underneath that is about outflow. It is the word for what comes out of a spring: the water that leaves and then goes everywhere downstream and waters or spoils whatever it reaches.
So the instruction is not about locking something away. It is about a source, and the reason it matters is that everything downstream is decided up there.
Which is exactly what you found out in your own kitchen on a Wednesday. You have been guarding the downstream. You have been controlling your face, your voice, your toasts, your generosity at Christmas, and every bit of that guarding was real and none of it went upstream, because guarding never does.
So take this now, before we go further. You are not a hypocrite at that table. The written word puts the whole of it at the source, and the Holy Spirit is the one who works at a source, and fourteen years of immaculate conduct downstream was never going to change the water.
Loving him and measuring him are two different circuits
Now let me say a thing you have never been told, and the written word says it and the Holy Spirit says it, and it is going to take some weight off you.
You have assumed, for fourteen years, that the sum proves something about your love for him. That if you really loved him it would not run. And so every time it runs you get a small verdict about yourself, and the verdict is: whatever I look like, underneath I do not actually love this man.
That is false. It is one of the most common false things a good person believes about themselves.
Love is not a feeling that has to be pure to be real. You have been at his side for fourteen years and you would be at his door at three in the morning, and that is love, established by evidence, and a sum running in the background is not a rebuttal of it. The written word measures love by what a man lays down, and the Holy Spirit has been in every one of those fourteen years with you.
The sum is a wound, not a betrayal. Somewhere, a long time ago, somebody taught you that there was a limited amount of being valued in a room and that it had to be won. And you have been carrying that arithmetic into every room since, and Rafa happens to be the man who stands in the place where it gets triggered.
You have a heart God offers to work on at the source. His word says the issues of life come out of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets up there, and this has never once been a test of whether you love your brother-in-law.
The plain hall and the inward gift
There was a hall in Los Angeles in 1895 where a man named Phineas Bresee refused to let anybody rent a seat, and the doctrine preached in that plain room was a clean heart: God's own work, done inside, given to people who had been treated as though they were not eligible.
Those two things are one thing and they must not be pulled apart.
Because preached in a room where the good seats are bought, a clean heart turns into a ranking, and a ranking is exactly what has been running under your ribs at every family table for fourteen years. A message about the inside, delivered inside a competition, becomes one more competition.
In a plain hall, with nothing to buy and nothing to be seen to have, it stays what it is: a gift, handed to somebody who brought nothing, doing what they could not do for themselves.
You are eligible today, with the sum still running. The written word puts the work at the source and the Holy Spirit is the one who does it, and there is no queue.
Ask Him for the source.
Not for help behaving well toward Rafa, which you have been doing flawlessly and which He has been supplying. Not for the grace to get through Easter. For the spring itself, in the specific place where the sum starts, before you have decided anything.
Say it in plain words, out loud, on your own. Tell Him exactly what runs and when it starts and how long you have had it. The written word puts the issues of life at the source, and the Holy Spirit is already up there waiting for you to name it.
That is the whole of your part in this, and it is smaller than fourteen years of good behavior, and it is the only piece that was ever yours.
You have a God who works upstream and it is written and the Holy Spirit is the one who does it, and nothing about fourteen years of counting has made you less welcome to ask this afternoon.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with your hand where it is, alone, in your own kitchen. The authority to speak them was not earned by fourteen years of good manners and is not lost by a sum running on a Wednesday. It is Christ's own authority, delegated, and because you are in Christ it has been given to you whole, exactly as you are. Speak them under not my will, but Thine: He works at the source in His own way and in His own timing, and one bad Sunday lunch is never the measure of whether He has begun.
- Sum, you are not something I have to keep beating with better manners. The written word puts the issues of life at the source and never downstream, and the Holy Spirit is the one who goes up there.
- Verdict about my own love for my brother, get out of my chest and off my Wednesdays. Jesus establishes what love is by what a man does and not by what runs underneath, and His Spirit knows the whole of me, so I stop grading myself, in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, You work at the spring and Your word says it and Your Spirit does it. I bring You the sum itself this afternoon, and I stop asking only for the strength to behave well at the table.
