A Clean HeartLuke 6:45

The Second The Door Closes

This message is for the sentence about somebody that is fully assembled and waiting before they have even finished leaving the room, and how fast it comes

It is not even a second. That is what you have started to notice, and it is why you cannot let this go any more.

She goes out. The door does that slow thing where it takes a moment to catch. And in the time it takes for the latch to click, the sentence is finished. Complete. Subject, verb, and the little turn at the end that would make somebody laugh.

You do not say it now. You have not said it in about three years, which was a real decision and it cost you something and you have held it.

But the sentence still arrives, fully built, in under a second, every single time, and here is what has been sitting on you since about February: three years of not saying it has not slowed it down by a fraction.

If anything it is faster. It has got better at being ready.

And you have started to hear it in other rooms. Not out loud. In the car, about the woman at the school gate. In bed, about your sister. About people you love, which is the part you cannot square with anything.

The mouth was the part you could get at. You got at it. You did the difficult thing and you have kept doing it for three years without any credit from anybody because nobody knew there was anything to stop.

And you are standing in a hall on a Sunday morning discovering that the mouth was never where it lived.

The Second The Door Closes

Jesus put the whole thing in one sentence and He was not scolding

There is a line people quote at children and it is not for children. It is a piece of plumbing, and once you see it as plumbing it stops being an accusation and starts being a map.

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.Luke 6:45

Out of the abundance of the heart. That is not a warning about speech. It is a statement about direction.

The mouth is downstream. It is the outlet. And a thing that arrives at an outlet in under a second was not manufactured at the outlet, it was already made, and it was made where the abundance is.

Which is exactly what three years has proved to you, at some cost, in a hall on a Sunday. You closed the outlet. Nothing upstream noticed.

So take this now, while the latch is still in your ear. You are not a woman with a discipline problem, and you never were. The written word puts the whole business in the heart and never in the tongue, and the Holy Spirit is the one who works at the heart, and three years of a closed mouth was never going to reach it because mouths do not reach backwards.

The three years were not wasted and they were not the job

Now let me hold two things at once, and I will not drop either, because the written word holds both and the Holy Spirit has watched you do something hard that nobody has ever said a word about.

The three years count. They count enormously. There are people in that congregation who have not been damaged, who would have been damaged, and there are friendships still standing that would not be standing, and God saw every single one of those swallowed sentences.

And your children have not learned it from you, which is a thing you will not understand the size of until they are forty.

But you have been doing the half of the job that was yours, and quietly assuming that the other half was failing. It was not failing. It was not started, because you have never once asked Him for it, and the written word puts that half in His hands with the Holy Spirit doing the work. You have asked for help holding your tongue. You have never asked Him to change what is upstream of it.

I want to be careful here because this is where this teaching gets bent every single time. This is not a standard you are behind on. There is no second tier of Christian who has arrived at a clean heart and sits nearer the front. Nobody is grading you against a woman who does not do this. If somebody has handed you a list, put it down, because it is not the shape of this at all.

You have a heart God offers to work on directly. It is written, the Holy Spirit is the one who does it, and it is a gift and not a promotion.

The hall in Los Angeles and what was preached in it

There was a hall near the middle of Los Angeles in 1895 where a man named Phineas Bresee refused to let anybody rent a seat, and the doctrine he preached in that plain room was a clean heart: God's own work, on the inside, offered to people who had been treated as though they were not eligible for one.

Those two things came out of the same conviction and they have to stay together, because separated, this doctrine goes bad in a specific way.

Preached in a room where the good seats are bought, a clean heart becomes a level. And a level produces exactly one thing in a woman who has been holding her tongue for three years, which is the certainty that everybody else has arrived and she has not.

In a plain hall with nothing to buy, it stays what it is: a gift, handed to somebody who brought nothing at all.

You are eligible this morning, with the sentence still arriving in under a second. The written word puts every part of the work in His hands, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for a better version of you to turn up first.

The breakthrough

Ask Him for the abundance.

Not for help holding your tongue, which He has been supplying faithfully for three years and will keep supplying. For the thing the sentences are made out of, the store they come from, the place upstream of your mouth where they are already finished before the latch catches.

Say it out loud, in your own words, in the car. Tell Him what happens, and how fast, and how long it has been going on, and then ask Him to change the treasure and not the tongue.

That is the whole of your part in this, and it is smaller than three years of swallowing and it is the only piece that was ever assigned to you. Nobody told you it was on offer, which is why you have not asked.

You have a God who works at the treasure. His word says the mouth speaks out of the abundance and the Holy Spirit is the one who changes an abundance, and you have not failed at a job that was never given to you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hand where it is, in the car, alone. The authority to speak them was not earned by three years of silence and is not lost by a sentence arriving in under a second. It is Christ's own authority, delegated, and because you are in Christ it has been given to you whole, this morning, exactly as you are. Speak them under not my will, but Thine: He changes a treasure in His own way and in His own timing, and one fast latch is never the measure of whether He has begun.

  1. Sentence, you are not something I can outrun by keeping my mouth shut. The written word says the mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who changes an abundance and my jaw never could.
  2. Speed, get out of my chest and off the back of my car. Jesus works at the treasure and not at the outlet, and His Spirit does the changing, so I stop guarding a door that was never the problem, in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord, You change what the words are made out of, and Your word says it and Your Spirit does it. I ask You for the treasure itself this morning, and not for a firmer grip on my own tongue.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
