Where The Rent Is Due1 Corinthians 12:22

The Word They Used Was Uncommitted

This message is for the sign-up sheets you have never put your name on, and the word somebody used about you in a meeting you were not in

It got back to you the way these things always do, which is sideways, from somebody who thought they were being helpful.

They had been talking about the trip. Not about you, exactly. About the trip, and about who was going, and somebody had said your name and somebody else had said, well, he is a bit uncommitted, and it had moved on to the next thing within about four seconds.

Four seconds for them. Eleven days for you and counting.

Because here is the thing that made it land where it landed. You have never once put your name on a sheet. Not the retreat, not the men's breakfast that is only a few dollars, not the weekend at the camp, not the thing at the coast. Every single time, that sheet has gone up on the wall by the kitchen and you have read it walking past and you have kept walking.

And every single time you had a reason, and every single reason was real, and not one of them was a reason you were willing to say out loud in a foyer.

So they have eleven years of evidence and one word that fits it. From where they stand, the word is fair. That is what is hard about this. It is not a slander. It is an honest reading of the only data they have.

But it is the wrong word, and it has been sitting on your chest for eleven days, and I want it off before you finish this page.

The Word They Used Was Uncommitted

Name the wound before you lift it

I am not going to hurry past what that did to you. It hurt. It hurt more than it should have and more than you would admit to anyone, and the reason it went in so deep is that some part of you had already half agreed with it.

That is the actual injury. Not the sentence in the meeting. The agreement you have been quietly making with it for years, every time you walked past that sheet and told yourself something. And the written word has never agreed with it for a moment, because the Holy Spirit joined you to that body and did not consult a wall.

So let it be named properly and then we will move. A man was described in a room he was not in, in terms that had nothing to do with his heart, on the basis of what he could and could not sign up for. That is a real thing and it has a weight and I am not calling it small.

Now here is what is written over the same man.

Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary.1 Corinthians 12:22

Read the two words at the end and then read the two in the middle. Seem to be. And then: necessary.

Paul is talking about a body, and he is saying that the reading a body does of itself is wrong, and that the parts everybody has quietly filed under optional are the ones the thing cannot run without. Not tolerated. Not carried. Necessary, which is a word about need, and the need is the body's.

You are necessary in that room. That is not a nice thing to say to a man who has had a hard fortnight. It is what is written about the exact member everybody assumed was optional, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put you in that body and did not consult the sheet on the wall.

The room was never the sheet

There was a hall in Los Angeles in 1895 where a man named Phineas Bresee made a rule that no seat in the place could be rented. Free seats, every one, and the people who came in with nothing came in first, and it was written down and meant.

I bring that up because it settles a question your building has never actually asked. Who counts here, and how is it measured.

Wherever that is unsettled, a room will find a way to measure. It will not mean to. It will just reach for whatever is visible, and what is visible is a sheet on a wall by the kitchen with names on it, and a man who is never on it becomes a certain kind of man in about four seconds.

Bresee took the measurement out. That is the genius of the free seat. It is not mainly generosity, it is the removal of a reading, so that nobody in that hall had to work out what they were from where they were sitting.

Your name has been off eleven sheets and you have been in that room for eleven years. You have carried people. You have stayed behind. And none of it was ever on a wall.

His word calls the unseen members necessary, and the Holy Spirit has never once measured a man by what he could sign up for.

What the word actually costs

I want to say the hard half now, because a message that only comforts you leaves you exactly where it found you.

You have never told anybody. Not once, in eleven years. And every time you took the reason home instead of saying it, you handed the room a blank space, and a room will always fill a blank space with a guess. The written word had already filled that space with the word necessary, and the Holy Spirit has been saying it over you while the building guessed.

That is not a rebuke and it is not your fault. There are a hundred good reasons a man does not say a thing like that in a foyer, and half of them are about dignity, which God is not against.

But it means the word they used is not a verdict about your commitment. It is a description of a silence, and a silence can be broken by one sentence to one person, on a Tuesday, without a single sheet being involved.

You are already fully in that body. That is written and it is finished, and the Spirit of God is the one who joined you to it, and no sign-up sheet in any building on earth has ever had the authority to review it.

The breakthrough

The word has to be answered, and it does not get answered on a sheet.

Do not go and sign up for the next thing to prove something. That would be the word setting your calendar, and you would be paying rent on a seat that God has already given you for nothing.

Answer it with a sentence instead. One person. Somebody in that building you half trust, over a coffee, in a corridor, and say the actual reason. Not the whole story. One true sentence about why the sheets have never had your name on them.

You are not making a confession. You are filling in a blank the room has been guessing at for eleven years, and you are doing it standing up, as a necessary member of that body, because that is what the written word calls you and the Holy Spirit is the one who says it over you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on the point, in the truck, wherever you are on your own. The right to speak them was never issued on the strength of an attendance record. It is Christ's own authority, delegated, and because you are in Christ it has been given to you whole, in the eleventh year of saying nothing. Speak them under not my will, but Thine: He honors and He seats in His own way and in His own timing, and one bad fortnight is never the measure of what He has settled.

  1. Sheet on the wall, you are not the register of who belongs here. The written word calls the members that seem feeble necessary, and the Holy Spirit joined me to this body without ever reading you.
  2. Uncommitted, you are not my name and you have no place on my chest. Jesus called me and His Spirit sealed it, so I put that word down where I found it, in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord, You made me necessary to this body and Your word says it and Your Spirit did it. I sit in the middle of the room today, and I say one true sentence to one person this week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
