The Kitchen Nobody Lingered In

This message is for an aunt whose devotion was total and whose kitchen nobody in that family ever stayed in for longer than they had to, and what that taught you about God without a word being said

She prayed for four hours every day and the whole family knew it and nobody ever mentioned it in her hearing.

Four hours. First thing, and again in the afternoon, and again before bed, and she kept a list of names and she worked through it, and there were about a hundred and forty people on it, and you were one of them from the day you were born until the day she died.

She never missed a Mass in fifty years. She fasted twice a week for four decades. When your cousin was in the hospital she was there every single day for nine weeks and she did not tell anybody she was going.

And nobody stayed in that kitchen.

That is what all of you remember. You would go in, because you had to, because your mother sent you round with something, and you would stand, and there would be a conversation, and it would be entirely correct, and at some point about four minutes in you would find that you were already thinking about the door.

Every one of you. Eleven cousins and not one of you can remember a single afternoon in that room.

And she prayed for all of you by name every day for your entire childhood.

Here is what that has done to you, and it is not about her.

You have a picture of what a life given wholly to God looks like, and it was the most vivid picture in your childhood, and in that picture the room is cold and everybody is looking at the door.

The Kitchen Nobody Lingered In

Paul builds the highest possible devotion and then removes one thing

There is a passage read at weddings so often that people have forgotten it is one of the most severe things in the New Testament, and the severity is aimed at exactly this.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.1 Corinthians 13:2

Read what he is willing to grant.

All mysteries. All knowledge. All faith, at the level that moves mountains. He is not describing an ordinary devout person, he is describing the most spiritually formidable life you could construct, and he grants every part of it without argument.

And then he takes one thing out, and the whole structure is worth nothing.

Not less. Nothing. He uses the word twice in three verses and he does not soften it.

So take this now, standing in a memory of that kitchen. You are looking at a definition that the written word itself refuses. Scripture is harder on a devotion without warmth than you have ever dared to be, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put that passage in the book, and He put it there for exactly the room you are remembering.

I do not know what was in her and neither do you

Now let me be very careful, because I will not have this become a page that judges a woman who prayed for you by name every day for eighteen years and never told you.

Here is what I actually think, and I offer it as a possibility and not as a verdict.

You do not know what was in that kitchen. You were a child, and children read rooms accurately and interpret them badly, and the coldness you felt may not have been coldness at all. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it true in you.

A woman who fasts twice a week for forty years is often a woman carrying something. A woman who cannot make small talk with an eleven year old may be a woman who was never once talked to as an eleven year old herself. And a room that everybody leaves early is sometimes a room where somebody is very lonely and has no idea how to say so, and has learned that if she is correct nobody will notice.

Nine weeks at a hospital bed and she told nobody. Put that beside the four minutes in the kitchen. Those are the same woman.

Whatever the truth of her, and you will not have it this side of heaven, the picture in your head is not the definition. His word makes charity the thing without which the whole structure is nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who produces it.

What the plain hall put in the same room

In 1895 a man named Phineas Bresee opened a hall near the middle of Los Angeles and would not let anybody rent a seat, and the doctrine that hall was founded to preach was a whole life given to God.

And the thing that is striking about the accounts of it is the food.

There were suppers constantly. People came in off the street and sat down and ate, and the same people who were preaching total devotion on the Sunday were serving at a table on the Wednesday, and nobody in that building appears to have seen any tension between those two facts.

Devotion and a full table were the same movement there.

That is the original arrangement, and the reason it matters to you is that it makes what you saw in that kitchen a variation rather than the pattern.

The written word takes the whole structure away without charity, and the Holy Spirit is the one who fills a room, and the picture you were given at eleven has never been the definition of anything.

The breakthrough

Put the two pictures side by side and let the second one be the definition.

You have one from your childhood and it is vivid and it is not going anywhere, and I am not going to tell you to delete it. The written word settled that, and His Spirit has been carrying it ever since.

Go and find the other one. There is a warm devout person somewhere in your life or on the edge of it, and you have probably discounted them, because at eleven you learned that seriousness looks like a cold kitchen and so warmth reads to you as somebody who is not quite as serious.

Put yourself in their kitchen. Repeatedly. That is the whole method, and it works on the level the damage was done on, which was never a level of argument.

You are not being called into that room. The written word says the whole formidable structure is nothing without charity, and the Holy Spirit is the one who grows it, so the picture in your head is a variation and never the definition.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in your own kitchen, with people in it if possible. The right to speak them was not earned by any hours of prayer and is not lost by a cold memory. It is Christ's own authority, delegated, and because you are in Christ it has been given to you whole, today. Speak them under not my will, but Thine: He warms and He gathers in His own way and in His own timing, and one remembered room is never the measure of what He has settled.

  1. Room everybody left early, you are not the picture of a life given to God. The written word grants all mysteries and all knowledge and mountain-moving faith and then calls the whole of it nothing without charity, and the Holy Spirit put that passage in the book for exactly that kitchen.
  2. Definition I took at eleven, get out of the middle of this word. Jesus filled rooms and people stayed in them, and His Spirit is the one who produces that, so I go and sit in a warm kitchen on purpose, in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord, You made love the thing the whole structure stands or falls on, and Your word says it and Your Spirit does it. I do one kindness this week that requires me to stay an hour, and I am not useful while I am there.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
